Rhode Island Red :
Please note that the Rhode Island Red is NOT an autosexing breed and is included here only for information.
Originally developed in America, they are known worldwide now as good utility fowl and one of the best known breeds. Most people recognise them for their stunning red colour which for the purposes of autosexing has been passed onto the Rhodebar as the Rhode Island Red is the ‘mother’ of the Rhodebar.
Generally speaking a good utility Rhode Island Red is hard to beat for hardiness and egg laying ability, they lay a tinted egg and are good free rangers although will do well in a more confined space when necessary.
They can go broody but should not be relied on to do so. Egg numbers on a good utility strain have been known to reach around 260 so when putting any fresh blood into the Rhodebars this is the egg count to look for when introducing fresh blood.
