The Welsummer :
Please note that the Welsummer is NOT an autosexing breed and is included here only for information.

The Welsummer is a Dutch breed and is known for the colour of it’s lovely dark eggs, it is the ‘mother’ of the Welbar. They have got a bit of a reputation for being bad layers but of beautifully dark eggs, which has occurred due to people hatching for darker coloured eggs rather than the utility of the breed which is a shame as I am sure they would be much more popular if their original use could be bought back.

When hatching for utility Welsummers people should really be hatching eggs only from the best layers rather than from the darkest eggs and if someone is looking for a fresh blood line for the Welbar's then they really must check the egg numbers of the parent Welsummers first to make sure that the egg count is good. Welsummers can lay eggs weighing around 2 3/4 oz which is a good size.

Welsummers can go broody but this is not a regular occurrence. They do best in a free range system but will not object to being enclosed. They have yellow legs and single combs and do also come in bantam size.

The Welsummer is used to create the following autosexing breeds :
Welbar
